European Film Festival 2023 opens in Hanoi

The European Film Festival (EUFF) 2023 in Hanoi opened on the evening of May 21, screening films from 19 European countries, starting with Close – the film that won Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival 2022.

Featuring a selection of contemporary European cinema, including several award-winning entries, EUFF 2023 presents stories set in a range of spatiotemporal contexts.

Taking the idea of “journeys” as its starting point, the festival introduces a diverse cast of characters – parents and children, athletes, artists, writers, emigrants, friends, and strangers – who travel across the continent to explore their identity, community, and heritage, often having a memorable time in the process.

Through their perspectives, Europe appears in all its kaleidoscopic beauty.

Besides the film screenings, the festival’s activities include discussion sessions after the screening, under the coordination of film writer Le Hong Lam; as well as the Film Review Writing Contest, which creates a space for viewers to interact and express their thoughts and feelings about movies, through social media.

EU Ambassador to Vietnam Giorgio Aliberti said: “As the birthplace of cinematic art, Europe has always been known for great films from every geographical region. Although this year is the 22nd edition of EUFF in Vietnam, we are delighted to be still able to present so many critically acclaimed, memorable, and always new European contemporary films which are touching with humane value.”

Coming to EUFF 2023, the audience has the opportunity to follow the journey of finding love, friendship, and family affection through films such as Close (Belgium), Mandibles (France), Gentle (Hungary), Loli Paradicka (Slovakia), Woman on the Roof (Poland), Mikado (Romania), or Sanremo (Slovenia).

Inspiring messages about self-belief or healing are conveyed through melodramas such as Miss Viborg (Denmark), Dating Amber (Ireland), Tove (Finland), Above the World (Austria), Precious Ivie (Germany), The Father (Bulgaria); or through movies with sports-themed films such as Champions (Spain) and I am Zlatan (Sweden).

Viewers will also experience diverse historical settings through films such as The Rising Hawk (Ukraine), Shadow Country (Czech Republic), I’m Fine (Italy), and Mitra (Netherlands).

EUFF 2023 is organized by the EU Delegation to Vietnam in cooperation with embassies and cultural institutions of EU Member States and the Embassy of Ukraine in Vietnam, with the support of the EU Policy and Outreach Partnership Initiative (EUPOP).

This is the 22nd edition of the program. In addition to Hanoi, the festival will be held simultaneously in Ho Chi Minh City and Hue from May 19 to June 4.

Vietnamese culture introduced at UN Bazaar International Fair 2022

The event was organised by the UN Women’s Union (UNWG) with the aim of raising money in a bid to support disadvantaged children around the world, including Vietnamese children. Vietnamese UN peacekeeping doctors organize spring festival in South Sudan

The festival featured a kite festival, a competition for Tet decorations and cooking skills, a buffet party, and a campfire.  This is the first time a Vietnamese hospital’s spring festival has been held during a UN peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. Hiroko Hirahara, head of the UN Mission Field Office in South Sudan, and Brigadier General Mike Cooper Mujuni, Commander of Unity Military Region, joined the festival. All hospital departments worked together in four teams to prepare traditional Vietnamese cuisine, decorate Tet booths, participate in kite flying, and dance around the campfire. Hanoi’s First Bike-Only Lane Set to Open

The Hanoi Department of Transport has announced that Hanoi will soon have a new 4km long and 4m wide cycle path along the To Lich River. This dedicated bicycle lane, which will pass through the Cau Giay and Dong Da districts, is set to open on February 1, 2024. The purpose of this project is to provide a safe and convenient transportation option for cyclists in the city. The cycle path will connect Lang Station of Cat Linh – Ha Dong Metro Line and No.8 Station of the Nhon-Hanoi Metro Line. The total investment for the project is estimated to be VND65 billion (US$2.64 million). There will be six public bicycle stations along the route, including two major stations at the Transportation University and Lang Station. These stations will provide approximately 100 bicycles and electric bikes to cater to the needs of Hanoi’s residents and students.
